How to Choose the Best Country to Live or Retire Abroad: 5 Questions to Ask Yourself
Every week, viewers ask me:
“What’s the best country to live or retire abroad?”
The truth is, there isn’t one perfect destination for everyone.
The best country for you depends on your interests, budget, climate preferences, residency options, and lifestyle goals.
Over the years, I’ve interviewed expats from all over the world and spoken with hundreds of people researching a move abroad. One thing I’ve noticed is that the happiest expats aren’t necessarily living in the cheapest country.
They’re living in a place that aligns with who they are and how they want to live.
Before you start comparing countries, ask yourself these five important questions.
Question #1: What Countries Actually Interest You?
This is where I encourage everyone to begin.
What countries genuinely interest you? What languages would you enjoy learning? What foods excite you? What cultures fascinate you?
Many people immediately jump to cost-of-living comparisons, but I think that’s a mistake.
If you’ve always been intrigued by Italy, Spain, or Portugal, that’s worth paying attention to. If Southeast Asia has always fascinated you, that’s another clue. Maybe you’ve always dreamed of living by the Mediterranean, exploring colonial cities in Latin America, or experiencing life in a culture completely different from your own.
Retirement isn’t just about affordability.
It’s about creating a life you’ll enjoy living every day.
Your interests can help eliminate many countries before you ever begin researching visas, healthcare, or budgets.
Question #2: Where Do You Qualify for Residency?
Once you’ve identified countries that interest you, the next step is determining where you actually qualify to live.
Many countries offer residency pathways for retirees, but every country has its own requirements.
For example, Mexico currently requires retirees to demonstrate approximately $5,200 per month in qualifying retirement income. That income generally needs to come from Social Security, a pension, retirement account distributions, or another acceptable retirement source.
If you don’t meet that requirement, Mexico may not be a realistic option through its retirement residency program.
The same applies to many countries throughout Europe, Latin America, and Asia.
Before you spend months researching a destination, find out:
What residency options are available?
What income is required?
Are there savings requirements?
Do you qualify?
This step alone can dramatically narrow your list and save you a tremendous amount of time.
Question #3: What Climate Do You Want to Live In Every Day?
This is one of the most overlooked factors when choosing a country.
A tropical destination may feel wonderful during a two-week vacation, but living there year-round is a completely different experience.
Some people thrive in warm, humid climates. Others find that constant heat becomes exhausting over time.
As we get older, our tolerance for heat and humidity often changes as well.
If you know you struggle with hot, humid weather, that may eliminate much of Southeast Asia and parts of Central America from your list.
On the other hand, if you dislike cold winters and love being outdoors year-round, warmer destinations may move to the top of your list.
Think carefully about the climate you want to experience every day—not just while you’re on holiday.
Question #4: What Type of Cultural Experience Are You Looking For?
One of the greatest rewards of living abroad is experiencing a different culture.
But what kind of cultural experience are you looking for?
Some people are captivated by European history, castles, cathedrals, and centuries-old towns.
Others are drawn to the history of the Inca or Maya civilizations throughout Latin America.
Some people are fascinated by indigenous cultures and life in regions connected to the Amazon, where many modern pharmaceuticals originated from plants that were first used in traditional medicine.
For others, culture means art, music, architecture, food, local traditions, or simply experiencing a different way of life.
There are no wrong answers.
The goal is identifying what excites you and what kind of environment you want to immerse yourself in.
The more connected you feel to the culture around you, the more likely you’ll feel at home in your new country.
Question #5: What Does Your Ideal Day Look Like?
When you picture your life abroad, what do you see?
Are you sitting at a sidewalk café in Europe?
Walking along a beach at sunset?
Living in a mountain town surrounded by nature?
Exploring local markets?
Enjoying a glass of wine overlooking a vineyard?
If you’re a wine lover, perhaps countries such as Portugal, Spain, Italy, Argentina, or Uruguay deserve a closer look.
If you love hiking and outdoor adventure, your list may look completely different.
The more clearly you can visualize your ideal lifestyle, the easier it becomes to identify destinations that align with that vision.
After all, you’re not just choosing a country.
You’re choosing how you want to spend the next chapter of your life.
How to Choose the Right Country for You
If you’ve answered these five questions honestly, you’ll likely find your list of potential countries becomes much smaller—and much clearer.
The goal isn’t to find the “best” country.
The goal is to find the country that best aligns with your interests, budget, climate preferences, residency qualifications, and ideal lifestyle.
That’s where the happiest expats tend to be.
And if you’re still unsure where you fit best, we’ve created a tool specifically for that purpose.
