Kevin In Porto
Kevin E. Young
I moved to Porto 4 years ago from Los Angeles, never having the intention of moving to Portugal. My original choices were France, Italy or Greece, but as they fell out of favor, Portugal started looking more desirable. After my research on the country I found Portugal was leading in Human Rights, Animal Rights, Gay Rights, and Wind and Solar energy savings. I was familiar with the Portuguese culture and traditions, having been born and raised in a Portuguese community in Cape Cod Massachusetts but Portugal had never been on my radar prior to 7 years ago.
After a few scouting trips to explore Lisbon (too big of a city for me) , the Algarve (not ready for retirement), Coimbra and Porto, I instantly got the feeling of home and a sense of community in Porto. I was met with genuine Portuguese hospitality, and the more I explored Portugal and all the charming towns throughout the country, I was confident it was the best decision of my life, and grateful every day that I live in this country.
As for moving to Porto it had many of the key elements I wanted in a new hometown, close proximity to the ocean and beach, the Douro River, small town sensibility, in the middle of Europe’s best wine country and lush countryside within 30 minutes.
I moved here alone, not knowing anyone and never regretted it. I was lucky to move into a charming neighborhood in Bonfim and make friends with many local Portuguese and expats within the first 9 months. Since then I have worked with many people setting up their homes from Porto to Albuferia and help them adjust to into living in Portugal. Living in Portugal does come with is challenges, but that does come with the territory of living in any new town, city or country. Cost of Living, Health Insurance, Banking, Utilities and Getting around from neighborhood to towns and villages are all approached a little differently here. I continue to work here as an Interior Designer and have experienced the challenges to navigate the Portuguese tax system.
